Phoenix Mountains

We took a short drive to the Phoenix Mountains today just to check it out. Upon arriving, it was apparent that we were not taking any stroller up any of those trails. I also realized quickly that my tennis shoes sucked on the gravel. We had no water and no sun block. No way were we able to do any hiking and I am actually leary of putting Elizabeth in the front pack and hiking up there. It looks like you actually have to do some climbing and I didn't see anyone with any babies. That said, we got a few weird looks pushing Little B around in the stroller. I will head back by myself sometime and hike to the top. I am sure the view is awesome!

Old House

I took a morning on our last trip to Nebraska to do some shooting with Jerred. After an 8am breakfast at Village Inn and 25 minutes of hard thought as to what we would actually take pictures of, we settled on an abandoned farm the Jerred had visited before. The house itself did not seem all that old. But it was most certainly unlived in. The sky was a very flat overcast white. I had a little fun with the sky in one of my shots. I show it in Color and B&W. I have some very crappy photoshop skills. Enjoy!

My neighbor had some ideas for some pictures downtown that he wanted to go and attempt. I decided it had been too long since I had last been out for some normal "fun" shooting. Here is a shot from our walk around downtown.

Miracle Condition

Had an evening shoot with the band "Miracle Condition". They were looking for some really simple promo shots that didn't involve any backrounds or "scenes" of any sort. By the end, we were coming up with shots like these and we all agreed that they looked the most "band-like" without any frills. I used 1 Alien Bee 1600 strobe above and to the right at 15' up with a bounce umbrella. The a.B. was at 3/4 power. My fill was a vivitar 283 strobe at 1/8 th power just to the lower left. We shot outside on the deck. Lucky enough, there was no wind.

5:30 a.m.

I have talked countless times with my friend Jerred about meeting up to go on a phototrip. We have yet to be able to do this. After thinking about that, I realized I haven't been on a local phototrip myself in quite the while. Jason suggested the Forest Preserve where he had scouted some Elk. We decided on Sunday morning at 5:30. It had been so long since I had gone and shot anything for fun and just for myself. Plus, it's always nice to go with a buddie and just talk nonstop camera and Seinfeld-ish B.S. the whole time! ha! At some point, I hope Jerred and I can hit up a phototrip sometime soon.

Macro Fun

I borrowed my neighbors 100mm Macro lens this week. It's always fun to walk around with the macro because a whole new world is available to photograph. This bumblebee would have not been fun with my 24-105mm lens. And the mushrooms would not have looked so tiny had I not bene able to include the quarter for size reference. Pretty fun!

Magazine Assignment

This was an assignment that Joe helped me with. I needed to shoot 4-5 images for a mock editorial layout. We needed to shoot one that would work as a cover and then a few for the inside for articles and such. I decided I would actually try and make a fictitious magazine cover to really "sell" the image as being cover worthy. Pretty fun to shoot. I had an off camera flash with an amber warming gel covering half the flash. Maybe too warm but I stuck with the images. Enjoy!

Oh Man...

I did this in Photoshop CS4 with an action I bought called the Draganizer. Actually, my buddy Jerred hooked me up with it and several other time saving awesome actions. I believe I still owe him for those! If your wondering, it's a stretch called the "Random Face Stretch". Basically, stretch every muscle in your head at the same time. It's a wonderful feeling when your done. It's real, I swear.

Project 4 - Form with Value

ah...our fourth and final project. It's crazy to think that during an entire semmester, we only did 4 projects. What I haven't mentioned is the countless sketches and renderings that were all required and due with the assignments. Plus, weekly critiques on progress. I actually took alot away from this class. This assignment was to show shape with depth to it. You needed a foreground, middleground, and backround. Once again, not my best or favorite but I did get an A-. Not bad at all for me.

Project 3 - Shape

This project was created using drafting tape. Yep....tape. I was using 1/8" and 1/4" crepe drafting tape. It took quite a while. The tape is black if you couldn't tell which is which. I have never had to be so acurate with an exacto knife before.

Project 2 - Rhythm

In project 2, we were asked to create four 4"x4" compositions that show movement and rhythm. These were made using white bristol paper strips and black construction paper strips. Two of my compositions have black backround and two have white backrounds. Once again, not the best in the class but I managed to squeeze out an A on this assignment. I especially liked the upper right composition.

Project 1 - ART 2D Design

This first project consisted of values. The task was to use guache and paint 80-100 values ranging from pure white to pure black in graduated increments. Then, of these 80-100 swatches you choose 15 that make even jumps in value from white to black. I didn't do awesome but it was enought to get me a B-.

And yet another assignment. This is an editorial portrait I did of Mr. Padilla at Evergreen Oak Electric. Mr. Padilla is the "Wire Man" at E/O. I lit this scene with one Canon 420EX on a stand and a shoot through Umbrella place just to the left and above the camera.

A Recent Wedding

These are some shots I took at a wedding this past weekend. We had our groups posed in front of Lake Michigan with a really harsh afternoon sun to the left. In order to keep those skies nice and blue, we used an Alien Bees 1600 strobe through an umbrella about 25ft in front and Jason stood with the 580EX strobe just to the left to light the scene from behind. I like how these turned out however, I am wondering if they are bordering on being a bit "too much". I like them anyway.

Another assignment from school. Thsi photo was taken in open shade on the side of a building. I lit Eddie at an extreme angle camera right with a warming gel to give it the look and feel of sunlight.

Flash @ Sunset

This image above was made for an assignment at school with the same name. I think the goal here was obvious. I had to light a person at sunset with my strobe. Pretty simple. I set up my flash about 6 feet camera right. My settings were 1/100s @ f/16. I covered half of the flash with an amber colored gel to warm it up a bit. I prefer to use myself as a model for these assignments. I have no choice but to be patient with myself and i usually don't get mad at the photographer when it is taking too long.

I felt like being creative with this one considering these shots for the assignment are pretty rigid. Just straight forward light. We spent the weekend in Michigan by the lake celebrating Jessica's birthday. There was kickball, a keg, bonfire, grilling, Bags, and some really amazing scenes of Lake Michigan. I'm a little sore from kickball which is sad because I was no super athlete on the field. I just get sore that easily in my old age.

Something to do

As the title states, it was Sunday and I needed something to do. And what better "something" than actually going out and shooting. My neighbor shoots for a studio and had to cover this rowing event. He invited me along. We shot under some pretty overcast skies and just finished up and got back to the car when the rain started again. Overall, it was a pretty nice day. I myself am not impressed with my shots but, oh well.

Wanda

I had another nice Sunday afternoon in the studio at school. I'm not sure if I am getting the hang of the lighting but I think these shots worked. Wanda had originally sent me four examples of the photos she was looking for. I tried my best to reproduce the lighting. I was trying to use harsher light with alot of shadows and contrast. I like the results I got for this first time out!

A couple shots from this week...

Perry (top) was the first session this week. I invited him to the studio at Harrington to try and get some really simple shots with just a gray sweep behind him. We had alot of fun with it and got a lot of really good stuff.

Jenn (bottom) and Allen were the second session. They are very close friends so I was more than happy to help them update their headshots. It didn't hurt that she made one of the most awesome dinners my wife and I have ever eaten!

Victor & Ginny

This shoot was done a bit differently. This was my first collaboration with my neighbor Jason on a shoot. For the most part, it went above and beyond good. Jason pretty much coordinated most all aspects of it. He lined up Victor and Ginny and the space to shoot them in. The other twist to this is that Victor and Ginny are just good friends and both actors. They agreed to help us set up some interesting bridal shots. They were awesome to work with! I have posted a few of the shots that we got including what the set ups looked like. The false window was probably the most successful of the shots. The shot of Ginny by the window is from Jasons collection. Enjoy!

Girl in Forest

This is a new take on a photo I shot in Lincoln Park by Lakeshore drive. The original is pretty bland and boring. The colors were subdued and the image overall was a bit cool. I added some light rays and boosted the saturation in spots and ended up with this. There are a few other items that have been altered but I will let you discover them.

Final Project

This image was created for my final project in my Digital Imaging class at Harrington here in Chicago. The glass balls are pendants that hang on a wall sconce light. They are only about as big as a small marble. The images are shots I had previously taken and are meant to depict times in my life. It was supposed to be a conceptual self portrait. Not sure if it is any good but I did get an A so, that is good enough for me. hehe

My latest wedding shoot took me to Puerto Rico. I could not have asked for a better setting or people to be around. The heat was completely tolerable but the humidity was something to battle with. I went down to the planetarium with some friends to get some night shots of the city. Pretty fun but also really cold. Yeah, it's a fake reflection. It may be a bit overdone. A good friend pulled off a VIP/Photo pass to the 311 show here in Chicago tonight. I got the call confirming the passes at around 7pm. I was there and shooting by 8 or so.

I didn't get there in time to get behind the barricade with the other photographers but I went out front with the 70-200mm and got these shots from around 300-400ft away. These shots prove "L" glass is worth the cost. It out performs me! It deserves a better photographer! HA!

To the friend(s) who pulled off the passes for me, thank you again! You know who you are.

First day

So, for any of you who have read my previous post, my first day was completely fine. Everyone was cool and the day went quick. I was just having a moment at the time of writing that last post. The photography gig is alive and well. In fact, I recieved today the first payment for (6) 16x20 gallery prints to be hung in my sisters insurance agency. Pretty cool. Get home. Go to mail. $$$ in mail. Send pictures. That is pretty much my dream. So, take my last post with a grain of salt and, I will still be lending out my Gerber. Thanks!!

Such is the way...

It's not a surprise to me that I am not rolling in money or fame with my photography. This is a pretty common un-happening with most creative hobby/careers. Heck, a creative most generally must create for a lifetime his/her passion and die before the content of their lifes work is realized and celebrated. The key is knowing that eventually things will come into focus.

I finally had to get a day job (pending my drug test, don't worry...I'm in) and such is the way, the very Friday that I was offered, and accepted the job, I book two shoots on Saturday and an all day event on Sunday. My wife always says that it is easier to find a job when you already have one. I think she is a genius!

Pure Luck

My day started with a really successful Urban Style shoot in a graffiti filled alley with Rocky. It was his first "real" photoshoot and it went really well! Feeling good about our job well done, I stopped at one of my favorite eatery's for a gyro. As I sat feeling REALLY full and about to leave, a neighbor I had just met the night before due to a mutual power outage in the building was strolling by. We exchanged hellos and he asks, "Do you want to go on a boat ride?" I sat a little confused for a second. He asked again and as i was about to decline, a moment of spontaneity hit me and I said, "Let me grab my camera!" and we were off. At this time, my neighbor introduced me to "Dwight". It was his boat we were to ride on. Shawn (my neighbor) had just met Dwight 30 minutes prior through a mutual friend at the bar. (I know, I know, sounds crazy) Anyway, after a brief ride in the car to the harbor, I was off on a boat on Lake Michigan. Here are some shots from the trip.

A Good 4th!

We started our day not knowing exactly how we would spend it. Aaron (at the grill) knew of this park that seemed quiet enough and not too busy. The six of us plus Sophie the wonder dog went to this park at around 3:30pm. Uncle Joe brought his disc golf basket, discs, and a frisbee. Aaron brought the grill and a ton of food. We brought some beer and wine. (We didn't know that we would stay so long). Anyway, toward daybreak, more and more people were showing up to the park and shooting off fireworks so we figured, why not stay and see what kind of show it will be. Lucky thing! We got to see a 45 minute show that local neighborhood rich people (they had to be) put on. The fireworks were huge! I am positive we were all TOO close to them but it was one of the best shows I have seen yet!

Inspired

Inspiration can be found anywhere. Today, Jerred inspired me to take these 10 photo's. Basically, I am copying him. He went out and took 10 pictures. He did no editing and used a fixed focal length of 35mm. He shot Manual and took only 10 pictures and good or bad, he posted them. So as I sat on my couch looking at his blog, I realized I needed a personal assignment and in a fit of inspiration, I got up and left with my camera. I held to the same criteria (with a few differences). My Canon 5D, full manual, my 24-105mm but only using 35mm focal length, and only taking 10 pictures. Good or bad, I am posting them. Thanks Jerred. Even when you don't know it, you're pushing me forward man! Here they are...10 shots!

So, I really did try and hurry to get this shot. The rainbow had spanned the lake from one side to the other just 10 minutes earlier. By the time that I arrived at the lake, this was all that was left. I still had time to wait for the boat to give the shot a little bit of depth. I wonder if they found any money at the end?

There was a guy next to me that had the same camera I have. I am guessing that his shots turned out just as cool. There were three of us (photographers) in all that ran to the lake at the same time. It was nice to run into some others with the same idea I had.

Our Honeymoon B&B

This picture truly does not do our accomodations justice. There will be more pics to come. Upon arriving, I quickly noticed that the house was full of Japanese art and furniture and the every bookshelf in every room was packed full of photography books. It turns out that the person who previously owned the B & B was a photographer named Edna Gmelch. She taught photography at the college here and there are portfolio's with literally thousands of her pictures in them. I have yet to look at them because we just got here but the work that is framed and on the walls is great. Her husband worked for an oversees shipping company (or maybe owned it?) and that is where all the authentic japanese decor came from.

In addition to this being a beautiful home (which we have to ourselves for three days), it is surrounded by vineyards that we are free to walk around in and explore. Our room has a patio deck door that opens wide enough to drive a car through it. The deck itself is as big as our room. From there, you walk down stairs to a swimming pool and lush garden. Best accomodations I have EVER had. Hands down.

My Buddy

I met this guy at Nebraska Furniture Mart. He was crazy. I can't really remember what conversation we had that even brought on the friendship. I am sure that it had to do with music. I want to say that our buddy Eric introduced us formally but who knows. He worked on the G/P Dock. I worked in receiving. To be fair, I think I came in on the tail end of his being crazy. He was in the middle of finishing up a teaching degree when we met nearly 10 years ago at NFM.

Halo---man, we have played some games. Some how, he has always managed to best me. Even when I practice and smoke most of my online opponents, my buddy comes along and kills me everytime. I'm a level 24. That's not bad, and he wins.

I changed the fate of our gaming forever as I stood in line at Dragon's Lair comics. As I stood there with my D&D Dice waiting to pay, I listened to an 8 minute conversation between the checker and some kid about Magic The Gathering. Now first, I was getting mad. "Stop talking and ring up his merchandise" I kept thinking. Then I starting listening. Magic the Gathering. Sounds fun. I bought a deck and showed my buddy. He bought the core game and the rest is history. We play online all the time now. HA!!

Somewhere in the middle of Halo and Magic, he got me started on a serious note with photography. I had a nice video camera. That was my first attempt. I ended up liking the "Still" shot feature of the camera though. So, one day my buddy offers a temporary trade of his Canon 10D for my video camera. I was hooked on the Still photography from there. I bought that Canon from my buddy and looking back, I realize what a great deal he gave me on it.

My buddy and I have been on alot of really cool photo trips since then. The pictures above are from a trip to Western Nebraska we took. Now that I live in Chicago and he in Omaha, I look forward to his visit out here and some more really cool trips together looking for that perfect picture.

We will always play halo. We will always play Magic. I will always be asking him photo questions. He will continue to give me confidence to be a photographer myself and someday, I will hopefully help him to be better. We will always share the new bands we find with each other. My lifelong Buddy.

Thanks to my friend for letting me take her pictures. I am really new to people photography as far as poses and guidance. This is just one shot of several that turned out pretty nice I think. Luckily, she will be around so she has a standing offer to have pictures taken whenever. It really gave me a chance to mess around with my new camera and maybe learn some things too. Check back for more. I plan on practicing this sort ALOT more in the future.

I was approached by a guy named Brian today on the street. He said, "Yo...you like hip-hop?" Not sure what about me among the other 30 people made him think that I would be interested but he handed me a burned disc and said it was his group "Thig". I wouldn't give him 5 bucks for it so he took it back. I understood. But I did talk about some promo shots for him and he gave me his phone number so that could be something to look for in the near future.
